Zits, 1/2/05

In keeping with my quest to say nice things about the Sun’s new comics in their first appearance in this forum, I present to you my favorite comics sound effect of 2005 so far. Behold, GXXXKK!! Zits is not held back by the tyranny of vowels.

I also like the way that Papa Zits (or whatever his name is) is extending an index finger towards the tree-shredder. Is he giving it a gentle push into the maw of the machine? Or is he just pointing and saying, “Ha! It said GXXXKK!!“

    In the first panel, the first several times I looked at it, it looked like the person in the purple shirt was a disembodied torso floating in space and reaching up for the decorations. It took me a long time to realize it was a person hanging upside down. Weird. Anyway, loved your post, made me laugh out loud as always. Thanks so much for your site.

    I think the father is pointing at the tree much like a football linebacker at the face of his well-tackled target. The tree is down, seriously sacked, and it’s time to talk trash.

    The thing that drives me nuts about Zits is that you have a white father, a blond white son, and a black wife/mother, which doesn’t seem to make any sense (and there was a reference early on to mom being son’s biological parent) and is never referred to by any of the characters.

    She’s not black. Her hair wasn’t even curly when the strip first came out. I have never seen her portrayed as any more swarthy than the rest of the family. Maybe some sweatshop colorist screws up the daily strips, but the sunday strips clearly depict her as white.

    (And just because someone has dark hair does not make them Greek)

    Yes, she’s certainly of pasty pigmentation.

    Nonetheless, both she and her husband have dark hair, and Jeremy’s very blond.

    Scott and Borgman draw one of the perpetually freshest strips on the comic pages today. It was way funny when our kids were teenagers and it remains right on target. It’s seldom that a story arc wanders off into the weeds of mediocrity, in stark contrast to many other strips whose flashes of brilliance are the exception.

    As to the brunette parent / blonde child argument, I should point out that Calvin’s parents were both brunette and he was blonde. Which brings me to my next point: the kid from Zits is Calvin grown up. The art is similar, he’s prone to daydreaming, and both he and the dad look like older counterparts to Calvin and his dad.

    First – Barry is some kind of freaky, mind-wrenching God who saw through their ploy.. I grew up ready Calvin, and just years after it went out, Zits came on the Toronto Star Saturday strips… ITS SO CLEAR NOW!!!

    Second – I work for a newspaper. My picture is on the masthead every week. One week I looked black. I’m from Canada. I don’t see the sun 9 months of the year… you figure it out.

    PS – If you ever see me dance (god help you) you’ll know I’m white.

    People, it’s perfectly possible that Jeremy’s parents each carry the gene for blond hair — which is recessive, explaining why they both have dark hair (the gene for which is dominant). Jeremy’s resulting blondness — blond recessive + blond recessive — is thus explained.

    Etc. I knew I went to high school for a reason.
