St. Valentine’s Day horror

Hi and Lois, 2/14/05

When I read this installment of Hi and Lois in the newspaper, I thought that there could be no greater horror than the sight of Hi making what appear to be “bedroom eyes” at Lois. Then I downloaded the colorized version of the comic, only to be confronted with inky blackness of the heart-shaped candy box that Hi has purchased, which I presume signifies some sort of S&M relationship between the two of them. I’d cry “But what about the children?” except that I’m reasonably sure that no children actually read Hi and Lois.

Trying to avert my mind away from the vision of Hi and Lois in fetish gear, I note that I’m not the only person with a home-based business who’s sometimes still wearing a robe when their partner comes home from the office. Of course, in Lois’ case, it just makes it all the easier to quickly change into … damn it, that didn’t work.

Nah, it’s not an S&M thing…it’s a shout out to their favorite band, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts!

Hi is really a member of the Thuggee cult and ripped that black heart from Thirsty’s fat, bloated, souless body.

    Happy Valentine’s Day, Lois!

Don’t worry, children. They won’t make any more babies. Because Hi’s seed is weak!
That’s right, dude shoots blanks– First came Chip, pale, blonde and lithe. They had a set of twins, both carrying Lois’s features as well. Then one more infant after that, also bearing the aryan traits of the female.
I think it’s pretty obvious they use a donor, or possibly another of Lois’ family members, given the generally low intelligence of the progeny.
When Hi says “…work off the calories…” he really means that they will do Jumping Jacks and Burpees later.

    LemonPepper: “Hi’s seed is weak!”

I think Lois is a hermaphrodite.

You know there are grandmothers across the country writing letters of complaint about this indecency.

Also, I inexplicably find Lois walking around barefoot to be hilarious.

Barefoot in a housedess tied up to her neck? If that isn’t submissive, I don’t know what is!

As for the black heart…well, the cartoonists doesn’t color DAILY strips (just Sundays) and I guess when doing black and white dailies, they always color these stuff black because most papers runs strips black and white anyway.

So blame the sloppy coloring to the syndicates. I also remember one colored version of the daily, and we see stuff outside the window, and they didn’t bother to color it in!

No amount of banging my head against my desk is going to erase the image of Hi and Lois “having relations” (especially in S&M gear) from my head.

You all missed the point. Lois is in a robe because she is “showing houses” (if you know what I mean nudge nudge wink wink) to a bunch of lonely, neighborhood men. Hi has caught onto that fact, thus the black heart for valentines day. Working off the calories will consist of Hi smacking Lois around ’til she confesses her sins and just who has been cuming around while he is at work.

I think that Thirsty has been thirsting for more than just beer for years.

It was an edgy weekend all around:

BALDO’s Tia told him to give Smiley, his girlfriend, for Valentine’s what makes her happy, so he gives her a ride on the handlebars of his bike (Feb. 12). Which wouldn’t seem like much except in the Jan. 31 strip couples her riding the handlebars with sexually suggestive dialog.

ZIT on Valentine’s Day gives Jeremy the closest thing to an orgasm we’re likely to see in an American comic strip; nicely done, I must say…

GET FUZZY’s valetine was Bucky not putting the shizzle in the litter bizzle and now it’s all over the hizzle.

Meanwhile, LUANN mentions something happening when hell freezes over on Valentine’s Day as well, which is one of the strongest uses of profanity in any strip.

Lovely, Mike. Now can you come up with something similar for Blondie and Dagwood?

Now now, it’s like what was said above: in a daily strip as pared down style-wise as Hi & Lois, you have to spot the occasional black, and it’s better to balance them, so panel one gets a house to offset the heart and panel two gets Hi’s pants. Then in panel three (off screen) Lois gets his pants and you know the rest. Let’s just hope Trixie’s room isn’t next door.

What’s with the S&M cartoon? Are they both submissive? (I’ve said too much)
