Bursting baby’s bubbles

Hi and Lois, 6/1/05

Sure, Trixie, that nice hawk is just giving the adorable little mouse a ride. A ride … into his stomach!

Maybe it’s just wishful thinking, but I feel like there’s been something of an uptick in melancholy in this strip of late. Maybe soon Hi and Lois will be faced with a dilemma: travel to Europe, or pay to have Trixie’s colon unblocked? She is the one they’ve had the least amount of time to get attached to…

Wow…I never even look at Hi and Lois but I might have to from now on. Outside of classic Peanuts, you don’t regularly see an infant come face to face with mortality and the ultimate cruelty of life in the funny pages.

“If you rewind it you can see the precise moment where [her] heart breaks…wait, wait…THERE!”

I think they’re going to have to rename the “Funnies” page. Either that, or they’re going to have to attach samples of Prozac to every newspaper.

Let’s see…we have rodent mortality (part of the great Circle of Life), pets facing major surgery, archeology students in comas, alcoholic sycophants, pushy (or pushed?) insurance agents, widdle unsupervised children with bwoken arms, and males with sexual dysfunction…where WILL we go for amusement?

Hey, Carol, I meant to tell you- nice picture. As you probably noticed, you had a few of the Kardinal’s hearts (and other things) fluttering around here. Speaking of children facing mortality and the ultimate cruelty of life, isn’t that what Ces is doing with the Kitty story? Laska’s right, it’s not your mother’s “Funnies” any more.

Garfield is always dealing with death at an existential level. That and the dread of Mondays.

Next, the Tao of Gasoline Alley and the Zen of Margo.

Nice timing, Josh; the comment count was just about reaching critical mass for another coup.

Whew! We can all relax now.

Nom — I had missed the connection between the existential dread Garfield always feels for the next Monday, and the existential dread we feel for the next Garfield strip. As Garfield sits with the thought balloon “I hate Mondays”, we sit with the thought balloon “I hate Garfield”. We are all the same — terrible, imperfect children at the feet of an uncaring, cruel God. Good work!

Since we’re back on Hi and Lois, I will try to post this one more time. This time I have stripped all HTML that seems to be frustrating the spam filter and you are on your own for hunting down the strips. I suggest using the WaPo comics page archive and then substitute the days in the URL window.

I gotta disagree with laska. That is not Lois by the pool. Her hair is too long and straight, even accounting for the fact that it is drenched wet.

    Exhibit 2 Chip’s Latest Girlfriend: May 19, 2005 (20050519)
Exhibit 3 Lois in Bathing Suit: July 8, 2004 (20040708)

Clearly the girl by the pool is a lot closer to Chip’s latest sweetie than Lois. Now, Chip is a playa and doesn’t always date blondes. Chip’s Girlfriend From Last Summer: July 30, 2004 (20040730)

Lois however did make No. 6 on my non-Kanonical list of top comic hotties and I pronounced her “Queen of the MILF’s”.
In fact Lois has always worn a bathing suit well. Vintage Lois in Bathing Suit:

Has Trixie always been so bald? She’s giving Charlie Brown a run for his money in the hair department, and at least ‘ol Chuck is dead (or Sparky is – same thing). Perhaps this is the early onset of cruel, cruel female pattern baldness – a new topic in the funny pages, as far as I know! Fortunately, she’s small enough to forgo an expensive toupee, and could probably use a standard-size merkin, instead.

You know when you read TCC, when you start to read a post about baldness, “merkin” is going to get dropped somewhere.

That is the most poorly drawn raptor I’ve ever seen. My monkey can draw a better acciptor than that.

Is it just me, or is there seriously something wrong in Panel 2? I mean, just LOOK! Is it that Trixie has such a serious case of gas as to warrant a catalytic converter and a muffler to help minimize the exhast emmisions, or has Trixie, coming face to face with the fact that life is not always so safe and secure, has just crapped herself mercilessly? What’s next? Melanoma from Mister Sunbeam?!

Yikes, Trixie’s so worried that her bum has burst into flame. Time for an oil change.

Worst hawk ever! Fer cryin out loud, that mouse is alomost as long as the hawks wing! Raptors rarely fly with prey in their beaks unless they are disturbed while “disassembling” it. They capture and carry with their talons. Finally I might add the hawk is grey…. Grey! I guess I must have missed the whole family of north American grey hawks. Where is Mark Trail when you need him? I’ll tell you where, he’s in the woods with Bob Crane “looking for diamonds” or whatever the kids are calling it today.

If you look closely at that raptor, you’ll see it’s Sam the eagle. Since the Muppet Show tanked, he’s been finding bit parts on Mark Trail, but he’s crossed over to Hi & Lois now – where he’ll no doubt feast on unattended toddlers in suburban front yards. Run, Trixie, run!

Bizzare, grey, Eagle/Hawk type bird swooping around picking up mice and toddlers in your neighborhood?

I’ve never seen an olive drab hawk or falcon. Is it US Army issue? Is that what they’re doing in Area 51? Dying raptors olive drab?

I vaguely recall an unprintable-here joke about a hawk and a mouse. . . I think I heard it around the Charterstone pool at cocktail hour back in the 90’s, before that homeless woman went all postal on the tenants. . .

We have a hawk family living in the tree outside our house. One of ‘em buzzes my husband every time he goes out. He’s taken to swatting the air and swearing prophylactically.

Our hawks look nothin’ like that brown paper airplane in Hi & Lois.

It looks like “Hi & Lois” has been put into Joel Hodgson’s “Cartuner” (from Mystery Science Theater 3000): “We’ve taken the drab and joke-free Hi&Lois and Mark Trail, the pointless nature serial, put ‘em in the Cartuner, and voila!”

As soon as I saw the “raptor” I thought, “That’s Sam the Eagle.” And then I thought, “Surely someone sees this as well.” Thank goodness for Fluffytufts. It’s a relief to know I’m not the only one seeing muppets in the sky with Hi & Lois.

#17 — That’s not smoke coming from the baby’s posterior! It’s a rare, black shrubbery. Lois has been dyeing her S&M wardrobe in the back yard, and spray painted a bit of vegetation.

#15 & #16 — What do CILF and MILF mean? Gawddam alphabet soup!

#32 — What should she wear? Stilletto heels? She’s a public school kid, and a twin. Lois probably buys matching sets of everything! Dot’s wardrobe is probably just like her brother’s.

#33 — The mouse is NOT wearing an aviator’s helmet. He looks more like Topo Gigio, the puppet mouse who used to appear on Ed Sullivan. Trixie! The hawk’s gonna eat me! Keess me goo’night!
