Metapost: Slack
Hey kids: my original plan was to keep posting witty commentary right up to the moment of my impending nuptuals this coming Saturday (Sept. 10). However, with all the last-minute stuff to do, it’s become increasingly clear that this isn’t going to happen, especially considering that I’m already like five days behind. In addition, I just heard from my Web host that I have to upgrade my install of Wordpress within the next week or so or my site will be shut down, which will eat into my valuable futzing-with-the-blog time.
Thus, I hearby declare today to be the beginning of my soft hiatus. I will probably post another metapost or two over the next few days, pertaining to the Wordpress upgrade, the long-awaited Ira-themed tank tops, a contest for readers, and an exciting new concept which will be called the “ultra-post” and which I cannot reveal details about at this time. Then on Sept. 11 the future Mrs. C and I jet off for two weeks in Greece, sans laptop, so: no comics updates at all, till Sept. 26. But till then: keep watching this space for non-comics-related but hopefully still riveting material.
Update: Oh, yeah, I meant to ask: is there anyone out there who’s had experience moving a heavily tweaked and modified stylesheet from Wordpress 1.2.x to Wordpress 1.5? If so, please e-mail me. You’ll be remembered forever as “the person who helped Josh move The Comics Curmudgeon from Wordpress 1.2 to Wordpress 1.5.”

Best of luck, Your Holiness (hmmm…maybe we should just stick with Your Popeness), and to the future Mrs. Pope as well!
Hey, if Bush can take five weeks off, only three weeks for you is a bargain!

*sigh* Well, it’s not like we can’t make our own jokes about the comics. Still it won’t be the same.
Has anyone suggested the idea of an end-of-year Best and Worst survey?

I’m super-jealous that you are going to Greece.
I will really miss CC while you’re gone, but if you insist on having a life, there’s not much I can do!
Have fun!

Now that I think more about your honeymoon destination, the more I think you should come to Australia. It’s spring, the flowers are in bloom, the weather is warm yet we still have many of the same dumb comics plus a few of our own that make you go “What the??” Maybe a CC World Tour, although we’d all have to buy a LOT more t-shirts to fund that!!
Anyway, enjoy!! Remember this: Love is the triumph of imagination over intelligence.
Or this from Mr. Mooselet: When a man wants his wife to hear, she doesn’t listen.
When that same man doesn’t want his wife to hear, she’s all ears.
D’ya think he’s trying to tell me something?? :-)

So you’re off for most of September. Any last-minute predictions as to the outcome of certain storylines now in progress? Any bets on where Needy Rita ends up? Or whether Sanchez picks up that handsome lawyer from State? Or…no, I won’t even ASK about Mark Trail because I suspect El Presidente will still be drying off from his dunking–when

No more comics commentary for most of this month?
NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
btw, I second the guest commentator idea, if only to keep the comment section from getting too unwieldy; long, that is.
Flying on Sept. 11, huh? Why don’t you take a ship to a military port in Hawaii on Dec. 7 while you’re at it? Or ride past a book depository in Dallas on Nov. 22 (or is it 23? I feel like I just failed a history test), for that matter??

Garfield: Garfield, you’re Garfield, NOT Stimpy!
Foxtrot: Mamma Fox is like Diane when Sam discovered her stuffed animal collection on “Cheers”.
FW: Panel 1… could it be?… I’ve finally awaken and the godawful serious FW was just a bad dream?…….. Panel 2…..AAUUUUGH!!
FBOFW: Yaaay!!Awright, April!!
…..now I just feel dirty!
Sally Forth: Hillary has the same affliction the older kid in “Buckets” had: change the hair, and POOF!… sudden sullen teenager. (Zits’ Jeremy just picked up where he left off)
(DT)GT: For the last 2 strips, it seems Alfred E. Neuman grew into adolescence, got some big black glasses and is inexplicably a nerd in GT now. Too bad ol’ Alf didn’t bring the better artists with him.

#31: RE: the Lockhorns
I’m with you. I’m married to a mathematician and he doesn’t get it either (the prime number joke, or the marital strife). Of course, are we really meant to understand the Lockhorns? Isn’t is just pap for the same folks who read Momma, find FC adorable, and have Cathy cartoons clipped out and posted to their refrigerator?
BigJoe
September 6th, 2005 at 10:59 am
#38: My theory is the writer has no idea what a prime number is, and for some reason he thinks “prime number” means “a low number” or “a single digit number”.
And nice perspective on the drawing. Check out the green in the distance. It is far away, but the flagstick appears larger than the Lockhorns look in the foreground. In fact the flag is taller than the green is wide. My guess is that flagstick is 60 feet tall. Myabe it was too tall and heavy to pull out of the cup and they just gave up.

Doc Jeff should get some kind of gold meddle for his prying and snooping into Rita’s peronsal life. I think he should look elsewhere for the intimacy he so desperately craves (maybe Dawn Weston or something). If Mary Worth gets indignant with him for his busy body tactics, that is truly the pot calling the kettle black.

Comics I skip or hate- Fred Basset, SF, Momma, Cathy, Andy Capp, Shoe, Jump Start, Over the Hedge. I can’t find a reason to read them.
Comics I can’t miss- Foxtrot, GF, Mutts, Rose is Rose, Non Sequitur, Close to Home, FBOFW (FBOFW- I love it- I’ve watched these fake people grow up and evolve over the years. You guys are very hard on LJ. Why? It’s just a newspaper comic!!)

#28: [Defensively, but also kidding]Why not “Yay, April”? I took Becky to be the “bitch” here (she has a very recent history of that; why would she suddenly be the good guy now?). If Becky’s suddenly the victim, how long until I have to say,”Poor Kortney”? … and I won’t even speculate on the concept of poor, misunderstood Howard Erk![/defensive/kidding]

Surprised no one’s commented on Scott’s friend/driver in the Dominican Republic in A3G.
Surely, people! Carlos has bad guy written all over him! Sunglasses, electric blue suit, black shirt — he’s not even a WASP!
Something fishy about Scott specifically requesting to be away from the crowds, too. I wouldn’t think that A3G would stoop to another white slavery plot, but that certainly seems where this is headed.
More calcium pills, mule!

BigJoe, I (a math major eons ago in college) have not a clue what the “joke” in yesterday’s Lockhorns was. In fact, I was so flummoxed by the strip that I posted pretty much the same question as yours at the Comics Curmudgeon Community (aka “The Forums”). The best that we could come up with was that Loretta meant to say “random number” instead of “prime number.” It makes about as much sense, since she seemed to be saying, “Maybe it would be simpler if I put down a [random] prime number.” And the reason? Possibly, she realized that Leroy was lying about how many strokes he had on the last hole. Maybe not. Only Hoest & Reiner know – and they’re not tellin’. Your guess is as good as mine. Thanks for bringing it up, anyway.

First time commenting here but the 9/5 Mark Trail pushed me over the edge. Lynn tries to drown her husband’s boss and his response is “this is ALL WRONG Lynn, you’ve got to STOP trying to make me more than I am!” Not “you’ve got to stop trying to kill people!” He is just as psychotic as she is. Dammit woman don’t kill my boss, I don’t want to be president of the company! Quit pushing me to succeed!

Oh, Becky is totally doing gigs. Let us not forget that she, in fact, IS, a gig.
Hey, did anyone else happen to notice the alternate endings in today’s Dilbert? I usually read it online at Dilbert.com, but I happened to catch it in a newspaper, as well, and I was confused at the different endings. The former is far funnier, which makes me think the latter was a replacement panel to placate certain squeamish newspapers. But, frankly, I can’t see much of a difference in the level of violence portrayed in the two versions. If there is a disparity, I would say the one of the guy with a hole in his back is worse. After all, that porpoise could just have its head stuck in his pants. We can’t tell.
And anyway, if newspapers were willing to print this a couple of years ago, you would think porpoise-impalement would be no big deal.
Anyone else have thoughts on this matter?

Oh, and just as an aside, “run for higher ground” is yet another inside joke I don’t get yet. Is there a glossary somewhere of all the Comics Curmudgeon terminology? “Hangin’ High to Higher Ground…More Zippers, Mule! to Mt. Foob”

September 7th, 2005 at 9:36 am
Running for Higher Ground comes from a handful of Mark Trail sunday strips that addressed various natural disasters or other dangerous situations wherein it seemed the common thread of advice.
Want to be safe? Merely getting to higher ground would be ample protection against everything from floods/typhoons, all the way through diaper rash.
