OK, kids, I’m going to post a weekend’s worth of comics later this morning, but first: this week’s COTW runners-up:

“Death is clear cut/It’s life that isn’t/The gorge took Aldo/but mine has risen/BURMA SHAVE” –mdrew

“You guys can keep ignoring it all you want, but no one — and I mean NO ONE — is exploring the many, many ways the word ‘punchbowl’ can be used for humor like TDIET’s Al Scaduto.” –gump worsley

“I’m so glad Sam and Horace are taking the high road, keeping the campaign focused on the issues — like Reggie’s fat, rich, alcoholic wife.” –Dennis Jimenez

“I’m sick of mustachioed foob characters using their lips for things (kissing, trumpet mouthpiece playing). It grosses me out.” –anne

“Meanwhile, random crap just spontaneously happens in Gil Thorp.” –RoboMax

“Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Other times, it is a disturbingly inappropriate prop trying to compensate for the lack of visual excitement in Judge Parker: Tales From the Closet.” –Decker

“I was unaware of One Big Happy until tonight, which shall forever be known as ‘Black Tuesday.’” –Joe

“If they made a movie about Gil Thorp they could just use chunks of firewood. It would be no less lifelike than the characters, and since all the action happens offscreen it really doesn’t matter that they’re inanimate.” –RentedMule

“I’m concerned about the lumpiness of the chaplain [in Beetle Bailey]. His head is nothing but tumor on top of tumor. And I’m guessing that odd crescent-wedge below his nose is his mouth, but the mechanics of his jaw frighten me.” –Blueline

“Then they could have a domestic disturbance, because a plugger marriage counselor is an episode of Cops.” –Steve S

JP: “‘You know what the doctor said about cigars!’ …Dr. Freud? Yeah, we know.” –Mibbitmaker

“Mary’s going to try another route to reach Dr. Jeff Cory? I think I get what’s intimated here but the way she said it it sounds like she may have just realized that the world is in fact round. ‘He’s so far away! But I can try another route, heading west to get to the Indies instead of our usual eastern trade route! That will show you all.’” –arlo

“‘Your husband can’t walk and has the mind of a child.’ ‘Then at least he’s happy.’ Yeah, happy as a child who CAN’T WALK!” –Ran

“And Horace’s wife is a fox. He doesn’t care if she is 15. And his granddaughter.” –smacky

“Are those… things… on either side just above Olive Oyl’s negative-space hips supposed to be her breasts, sagging and torn after years and years of over-zealous manipulation at the spinach-fueled fingers of her cyclopean beau?!” –Wirrrn

“I think Mark Trail has honestly stopped caring. For the past three days, it’s, ‘We should save Molly … yep … any time now. Ah, forget it. Lets just drink beer and talk about how they’re going to horribly mutilate her.’” –Monkey’s Paw

“Can’t you see that the poachers are going soft? Molly can melt her way into anyone’s heart. It’s Reverse Stockholm Syndrome. First they won’t be able to kill her, then they will save her from a giant mallard and everyone will have a good cry. Then Molly will eat them. Or french them, whatever.” –ben

“So, I know this is a problem that comes up periodically in the horrifying Dr. Moreau-meets-Git-R-Done world of Pluggers, but a chicken owning a pet cat is just asking for trouble.” –Cold Eels, Distant Thoughts

“So, when Dr. Jeff doesn’t return her calls, Mary Worth heads down to his kids’ workplace to harass them about it? I’m pretty sure this is covered in the definition of ’stalking.’” –Donut

“This is Mary Worth and so disappointment is inevitable.” –Dactyl

“I’ve already given my ass to Margo, but Tommie has stolen my heart with her adorable self-doubt.” –dramashoes

Also! A fab new Comics Curmudgeon merch photo has arrived from faithful reader Non-Shannon. She’s working it like a claw here with her beloved bearded dragon, Sir Hubert Cumberdale.

You too can be like Non-Shannon by (a) buying stuff from my store and (b) (this is the important part) sending me a picture of you wearing it.

Finally, in a new weekly feature here at the Comics Curmudgeon, I’d like to thank this week’s advertisers:

I love this site. In a world of backstabbing bullshit, it’s so refreshing that we can bond together and mock fictional characters.

And I sincerely hope that while we watch Raju having a bad time at the party, Sam is finally fulfilling his husbandly duties! What sort of weeklong tease is this? What’s the matter? You “not the marrying kind”?

Oh, and do the voters in this town care so much about being “the marrying kind” that your wife showing up drunk to a political rally is seen as an asset to your campaign?

JP: Am I the only one who’s still itching to hear about Ragu’s pontifications on third world economies? What about the microlending boom? Will that really have an impact on, as they say, the price of tea in China? Really, Raj, you need to show them the souped up Gunga-Din on steroids act that you were perfecting in the clothes botique. Then, and only then will you win the American teen-age women over and make their hearts swoon as you enter the room, paving the road for your ultimate plan of world domination ala Monty Burns. “Eeexxxelent!”

    In other comic happenings:
    Marmaduke: Still a big dog.
    Ziggy: Still a loser.
Garfield: Still likes to eat junk food.
Garfield, I must admit, is not a one joke strip. Garfiled is either hungry or lazy. That clearly qualifies as a two joke strip. Today happens to be “hungry”.
Cathy, in contrast, is at least four jokes circulated about in no particluar order, but does so for an entire week per joke.
    1 – Clothes are funny
2 – Binge eating is funny
3 – Men and women act differently and that is funny.
    4 – Mothers are funny.
Today is a number 2, in case you’re interested.

People complain about all the action in GT taking place off screen. We’ve seen an exploding car, a football game, an exploding mailbox, a beer party, and what Devo would do to a forest if they were allowed to weild chainsaws. A3G on the other hand has “good old” Tommie bantering with the old/young/old prof – well, “banter” would imply that there is actual content. Tommie says some vague statements about a problem, as she would to the waiter at the coffee shop, and not exactly the sort of exchange that would take place between two trusted long time friends (who slept together on New Year’s Eve because everyone else in the strip had more interesting story lines). The exchange reminded me of this previous discussion of Tommie’s ill-defined, overly analytical whiny problem. Meanwhile, the Prof is thinking “Whatever, Red. I’m dating a 21 year old! Woo-hoo!!”

    # 10: Wow… From the Dallas Morning News:

Another reader whose entry was published had “his” cartoon printed on a T-shirt, Mr. Brookins says. When the man died, his son called the cartoonist to tell him his dad insisted on being buried in his Pluggers shirt.

So, you know you’re a plugger when your greatest achievement in life is having your idea used in a Pluggers comic? I’m not sure if that’s cute or horribly sad.

On my trip to Vietnam last year, we were caught on a boat in the middle of the Mekong River during a horrendous downpour as our tour guide tries to raise the main office on her cellphone to ask whether or not to cancel the tour.

Actually (unless this was odd synchronicity indeed) this was in Sunday’s Judge Parker, with the (forgotten on Monday) hunk having a “full boat wrestling scholarship.” Which I think is meant to mean he got a “full boat” scholarship – i.e., due to his wrestling prowess, he gets 100% of his tuition paid.

NSN, the cartoonish “gazongas” is infinitely more suitable for the Curmudgeon and His World than the ripe-fruit-image-inducing “free-range melons”.

COTW! Yay! I’m so proud and happy and… really annoyed because I’m going on vacation tomorrow and I’ll be off-line for the whole week! Still, I’m not going to give up a trip to Yosemite just so I can stay home and watch myself be COTW. Am I? The park service does say the waterfalls are dried up, and there’s no real color because it’s evergreen, and it’s cold and there may be a plethora of bears. “But,” they add, (I swear) “there’s nobody here!” That’s their official website slogan for attracting fall visitors. I’m going to look for a sometimes-minature bear with a red collar and a gold tag as soon as I get there.

    Thanks for the honor, Josh!

#57: “Who the heck names their cat “Beast”?” As it happens, some very close friends of ours had a cat named Beast. The name was actually short for “Beatrice,” as in Virgil. Damned English majors.

    #66, Summerhouse, congrats!

If you find Molly, and you give her a ride to escape from the poachers, do NOT let her french kiss you while you’re driving. If she does, throw one arm over your eyes and scream “NOOOOOO” like a little girl as you head over the edge of the abyss.

Please have bottle of “Johnny” handy.

More information about french kissing small bears while driving drunk may be found on the internet (likely you’ll be directed to this site though).

67 2fs–Actually, Beatrice is not in Virgil (or, in a more Latinate spelling, Vergil, as in his real name, Publius Vergilius Maro). You are thinking of Dante, whose guide to the underworld in the Inferno was the Roman poet Virgil.

The principal honey in Virgil’s writings was Aeneas’ temporary girlfriend Dido, queen of Carthage. He dumped her to continue his quest to become the ancestor of, among others, Julius Caesar.

Dido might be a good name for a cat. Or Julius Caesar, depending on the cat.

    (Damned classics majors.)

    #36 hogenmogen:

I was surprised to see the Spider-Man strip say:

“Bitten by a radioactive spider, Peter Parker has gained that insect’s proportionate strength …”

Er, what insect? I’m pretty sure Peter started out as a scientfically-minded young man, and as such he would know that spiders aren’t insects. Maybe he should alert the writer of his comic strip.
