Ellie Patterson: Homewrecker

For Better Or For Worse, 1/17/05

You know, I’ve been on plenty of long, dull car trips with my mother, and I’m pretty sure that she’s never subtly encouraged me to pursue someone else’s spouse. Mostly we just play word games (“My name is Cathy, and I live in Cleveland and I sell … canaries!”).

I’ve been told (and as usual am too lazy to do the actual research to back this up) of a charming tradition in Mexican telenovelas: when the series is about to end, all the stops of these usually ever-so-subtle programs are pulled out, and all the main characters meet melodramatic, often fiery and violent, deaths. For Better Or For Worse is in fact going to wrap up in the near future, and perhaps that’s the plan for the strip. Elizabeth ends up in a vicious catfight with the hugely pregnant Thérèse for Anthony’s love. Michael and Deanna are pursued through the Northwest Territories by the Mounties after finally killing Deanna’s mother in a fit of wholly justified rage. John starts prescribing himself potent opiates and spends most of his days staring at his train sets in a blissed-out haze. And Ellie and April join forces to finally track down Kortney and give her what’s coming to her.

Elizabeth’s paper coffee cup is a nice visual touch. Presumably they’ve taken time out from plotting adultery to make a quick layover for supplies at the Stop N’ Go/Arrêtez Et Allez.

Hi from today’s MetaFilter link. I’d like to add your funny blog to my RSS reader list (SharpReader) but it isn’t validating so SharpReader is not happy:

I would pay big money to see the series end that way. I want to see Jon Rosenberg put up a newspost on “Goats” that says ‘Is it just me, or has Lynn Johnson gone completely insane?’

    At the Stop ‘n’ Go???

They’re heading into northern Ontario, fer goodness sake! They undoubtedly tucked into the drive-by at the Timmins Tim Hortons for a double-double and a brace of Apple Fritters to keep them alert for the rest of the trip.

Who are you kidding? You think Liz can make the trip without something to take the edge off? There’s Seagram’s Canadian Hunter in that cup!

Still not working for me in SharpReader. The link in my original comment goes to the validator and shows the nature of the problem.

“Still not working for me in SharpReader. The link in my original comment goes to the validator and shows the nature of the problem. ”

And after Elizabeth says this, Ellie pulls to the side of the road and says, “Please hand me the Seagram’s. Lord knows I need a hit of something. I didn’t know your problems were so deep.”

Mike D is right on the money, and stole my comment. But I would bet on Tim Bits, personally.

I find FBOFW syrupy and saccharine coated. Yes, having a telenovelas type ending would inject some much needed excitement into things, but I suspect it’ll end the way it has been all along – full of ‘warmth’ and Leave-it-to-Beaver goodness. (At least LITB had Eddie Hascal to liven things up).

I’d love to see the series that way, but if Elizabeth ended up in a vicious catfight with Therese then I guess Elizabeth would end up getting the crap kicked out of her. In my opinion Therese is just waiting for the right time to kick Elizabeth’s ass anyway. Not that it would be a total onesided ass-whooping, but Elizabeth would regret very much getting into Therese’s face. That’s just my opinion though.
