9² Chickweed Lane
Post Content
So ends the 2026 Comics Curmudgeon Summer Fundraiser. You guys are the best; thank you!
9 Chickweed Lane, 7/25/26

Say, did you know that people have sex? 9 Chickweed Lane does, and wants to show us as much of it as possible! It started in 2008, when Edda and Amos abandoned their adolescence and virginity on the lid of a Böesendorfer Concert Grand in Brussels. With the “will they or won’t they” tension broken, the strip sustained interest by introducing stand-ins Xiulan and Hugh Godalming, Fernanda Jons and Seth Appleby, Fleurrie and Sven Spocket, Diane and Francis Durly, Nan-Lin and Arthur Peel, and others, all with the same story: Will they or won’t they? Oh yes they will, and often!
Soon, horny couples crowded the strip and their stories grew monotonous. To escape that trap, the strip rushed Edda’s twins Polly and Lolly through adolescence into adulthood and marriage, and loosened up the timeline. Now lucky readers can look back at Edda’s and Amos’s awkward teen courtship while enjoying the sexual antics of three generations: grownup Amos and Edda and all the others in the present, daughters Polly and Lolly and their husbands in the future, and Edda’s stepdad Elliott’s lusty courtship of Juliette in recaps of the past.
Nice save, but not a long-term solution. After all, assuming monogamy, the maximum rate of couplings is (P/2)*f, where P is the number of people and f is frequency. I fear Team Chickweed may have its eye on combinatorics: C(P,2)*f, dropping the monogamy (and incest) restrictions, or even (C(P,2)+P)*f if we throw in self-pleasuring. After that, I fear for Edda’s cat.
One Big Happy, 7/25/26

Hey Joe, Pluto is the Roman god of Death and ruler of the Underworld, and you do not want to piss that guy off. And Disney’s copyright lawyers won’t go any easier on you, so tread lightly.
Lockhorns, 7/25/26

They have one, Leroy, and you’re not gonna like it.

MW-A hypocrite. Can you say hypocrite, boys and girls?
FC-“Where do I put my keys?”
FC-“None for me thanks. I’m driving.”
One Big Happy:
“Joe, did you know that Earth is the only planet not named after a god?”
“That’s not true! Mars is named after a candy bar. Mercury and Saturn are named after cars. And I’ll spare you the usual tired old body part joke about Uranus!”
RMMD: As much as I bust on the Morgans, I’m not liking the In Cold Blood direction we’re heading for.
Lockhorns:
“Actually, Leroy, I used to ship meals over to Jean-Paul Sartre at his request to allow him to ruminate further, while he was eating, on the existential tangle in which we find ourselves. I was the inspiration for his play ‘No Exit‘ !”
Mary Worth:
“Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.”
— Dean Wormer to Flounder, “Animal House”
Oh. Wait a minute. It isn’t Sunday Quote Box Time yet.
FC: She knows, Billy. Why do you think she first strapped your party hat over your mouth and said “Let’s all pretend we’re birds!” ?
Lockhorns: Loretta’s cooking looks just like Loweezy’s. Does this mean Leroy has higher expectations than Snuffy does?
Crankshaft: On the bright side, they won’t be invited to the next All-American Super Bowl Halftime Show.
H&L: Usually I’d complain about product placement in a comic strip, but Molson Coors’ idea to pay for Thirsty to be carrying Pabst is a masterstroke.
Zits: “Don’t let us catch you doing something stupid like in Mary Worth or Gil Thorp, but make sure you don’t become some pallid cipher of legacy teenagedom like Alex Bumstead or Chip Flagston.”
9 Chickweed Lane: If the only way she can tell he’s a boy is “on faith,” they must still be a long way from having any sex. And he’d be wise to stay out of really cold water from now on.
Lockhorns: Leroy knows very well that two-dimensional creatures have to both take in and expel nutrients through the same orifice and wonders if 3-D claymation is a viable option.
9 Chickweed Lane : weirdest take : I think Brooke McEldowney believes it’s physically impossible to be sexually attracted to a man, even if you’re a woman. That’s why EVERY relationship is just the guy debasing himself to a woman he worships; he can’t imagine what a woman would get out of a relationship (since they can’t possibly find the guy attractive), if not for being constantly showered with adoration (and the sadistic glee of humiliating someone else).
(ALSO : is today a rerun or a flashback? I’ll give McEldowney that; making his characters become unstuck in time (and stuck in a rut) helps hide reusing old strips!)
**************
Between Friends : Maeve just forgot that he stole her phone and deleted her calls to control her social life, didn’t she? Like, she could still be “I forgive him for what he’s done” while acknowledging he did bad stuff RECENTLY!
*************
Lockhorns : Oh no, Uncle Lumpy, Leroy’s going to follow up that line with “and it’s probably going to be every orifice of my body, simultaneously, in a way that makes describing it as ‘explosive’ feel QUAINT”
*************
Six Chix : “But mostly because there’s no rules against re-reading a novel you’ve already read before, AND no rules insisting it has to be YOUR yacht, and not a ship you’ve taken over by slaughtering its occupants while in your full-moon-induced werewolf alter-ego.”
@Anonymous: Six Chix lost me with “Written on a 5000 piece puzzle”
I mean… huh?
Six Chix:
-Takes place in a castle
-Has a believable romance
-Has talking animals.
I guess if Piro wants to read Medieval furry porn, who’s going to stop her?
MT In a world with gorilla sanctuaries on every corner, I guess the local vet hospital can handle a dozen large primates being dropped off for treatment, sure
GT And then Mimi will drown her sorrows with a new bartender, and start a new romance, and the cycle begins anew?
Saturday is for healing:
BF: Maeve! Amazingly, she makes two smart decisions in the same sentence.
BB: without his glasses, Plato likely feels neked, but also missed the tree’s come hither look. (Personally, I like what glasses say about a man)
CURTIS: Michelle-speak works.
GA: in an isolated world, Gertie gives Ava Luna the highest goal she can think of.
MW: Wilbur becomes introspective (see BF)
PEANUTS: Heal, or lose a relationship (See BF)
S4th: as predicted, the point of arc is reconciliation between siblings. Tho it will likely be one-sided so destiny won’t be disturbed. (See BF)
RT – C’mon buddy- enough already. It isn’t even funny.
LOCKHORNS: Tasteless strip, in light of massive ve explosive diarrhea.
RMMD: When reading “The Morgans are pretty smart folks,” remember this is a world where the average store manager will let these two walk out of the store with a shopping cart full of expensive electronics. Twice. I’m just saying that “knows how to use a knife and fork” qualifies as genius level around here.
@Anonymous: 9CL: I think the original strips were drawn so that adolescent(?) Edda was a sloppy and frumpy as Amos. Plus half-assed backgrounds which he gave up on long ago. New strips have Edda drawn as a sexy minx, no matter what age.
SlyF – In panel 1, the scratchy scrotum is treated with Clotrimazole, in panel 2 Terbinafine, in Panel 3 Miconazole was used and in panel 4 we just hope things take care of themselves.
One Big Happy: If I wanted a comic where two people just talk random nonsensical idiot jargon to each-other, I’d read Intelligent Life
(actually no, I wouldn’t, because Intelligent Life sucks)
H&L: Between the liquor store and Hi’s house Thirsty drank 38 ounces (3 and 1/6 cans) of beer which probably explains his total lack of give-a-shitness to put a partially drunk beer back in the box.
9CL: Every so often, I taste asparagus to confirm that yes, I really do detest asparagus. Seeing 9 Chickweed Lane after having dropped it a couple years back has the same effect.
L’horns: Okay, who had The Lockhorns as the first strip to reference the cyclospora outbreak?
MW: Charterstone has special paths only 18″ wide for solo, introspective walking.
CS: [facepalm] Oh, *no*….
@CanuckDownSouth: On GT – maybe that’s the ‘Chapter 8’ that’s about to begin as was announced yesterday?
C’shaft: Yeah right, I’m sure the current administration (or anyone else, for that matter) was falling over themselves to have a volunteer choir from a dying Midwestern congregation perform at their big semiquincentennial blowout.
DT: Dick, I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to be revealing information on ongoing investigations to members of the public, especially if there’s a risk they might (intentionally or otherwise) tip off your targret?
Dustin: Remember when you used to have a lot of energy and never wanted to take a nap? You know, the part of you that died after you got married?
GT: Yes, Gil is happily married, but the important thing to remember is that his ex is alone and miserable, her just punishment for not making Gil Thorp the center of her universe.
JP: “No, I mean I really don’t know what to say. What makes you think it’s a good idea to dump all your existential angst onto a kindergartener? Don’t you have a therapist or something?”
Luann: Ugh, I take it back, bring on the morning sickness jokes.
MW: It doesn’t make you anything, Wilbur. It proves you’re the same selfish, self-absorbed asshole you’ve always been.
RMMD: Oh great, what are you going to do, tell them you’re a sick Palestinian orphan and they should send you their lunch money?
@Hibbleton: And balloon crashes. Conveniently located near cell phone towers!
Mary Worth Mashups: Which of the three linked mashups really completes today’s strip?
“I fear Team Chickweed may have its eye on combinatorics: C(P,2)*f, dropping the monogamy (and incest) restrictions,”
I’m sorry, why are you limiting the set of instances to C(P,2)? This is 9CL; we absolutely need to factor in threesomes and larger groups into the mathematical model. The fully general form is that each person may or may not participate in a given event (though we all know that “may” is by far the likeliest possibility), so (2^P)*f.
THE LOCKHORNS: Dennis the Menace grows up and gets married.
GT: As far as I can tell, only two people showed up altogether. I’d feel bad, but I don’t like Mimi.
RMMD: So, they’re going to say they’re from The Fun Safety Squad and take all of the boys’ toys? Diabolical.
MW: Oh, Wilbur, Wilbur, Wilbur. That is NOT a question you want to put out to the cosmos.
This is what happens when you skateboard without a helmet. Don’t be like Joe, kids, protect your noggin.
RMMD: Knock on the door and ask June for twenty bucks for violin lessons. That’ll buy Uncle Jimmy a lot of ramen.
@Dmsilev:
Yikes, that’s gonna be one grotty lake!
@TheDiva: DT: Also, not telling the public is good, because with so many cases sometimes one guy shows up and says something like “Did you find out who poisoned the victim?”
The cops never leaked the cause of death to the public. Which makes it a useful tool in weeding out potential suspects.
@Ukulele Ike:
#30. Shockingly, not as many ramens as you’d think. Yesterday price had gone up from $.25/ pkg to $.43!!! Being destitute is expensive these days
I read the caption before I even glanced at The Lockhorns today, and my brain translated what I read into “Beetle Bailey nonsense! More than usual!”
Can a stream-of-consciousness notion be both accurate and inaccurate at the same time?
9 Chickweed Lane: I’m so used to the puritanism of other comics in the newspaper that 9 Chickweed Lane tends to throw me off due to it’s attempts to be sex positive. Attempts I’d appreciate if it weren’t so bad at it and drawn so hideously most of the time.
One Big Happy: That opening line is akin to saying “hey, did you know that pitbulls are not the only breed of dog?” as if it’s obscure trivia.
The Lockhorns: What do you think the Lockhorns’ one-panel gags would look like in real time? Like, do they just say these lame snipes at one another during random moments of silence or conversation than awkwardly stand or sit around waiting for a laugh? Does the end of the comic prevent us from seeing things like heated screaming matches and physical violence in response to the insults? Something to think on.
One Big Happy: There are exoplanets not named after gods!
@Bob Tice: G’NITE, EVERYBODY!
The Hateeachothers (haven’t seen it for a while): I admire their timeliness. And no ‘brain worm’ jokes.
MT: Happy is holding a young gorilla in his arms. So strong, but so dumb.
GT: how is Gil like the WWE?
He schedules events for the same time and same town as his archrival.
Well, Mimi.
You should’ve known better than to ‘switch teams’ on Lord God Coach Thorp.
9CL: I appreciate your attempt to reduce 9 Chickweed Lane to banal combinatorics, Uncle Lumpy.
@Anonymous: Not quite true. Edda and her mother used to salivate over Sven.
@Anonymous: …. I think Brooke McEldowney believes it’s physically impossible to be sexually attracted to a man, even if you’re a woman….
I remember an embarrassing number of strips (and I wish I didn’t) where the female characters lolled out two feet of tongue upon meeting Seth Appleby. It was more gross smirky ogling than sex appeal, but then most of his women are smirkily ogled as well.
Rex Morgan: The Trickster Twins trick the boys into taking all the eggs out of the fridge, then abscond with them. The boys, not the eggs: the girls haven’t read “The Ransom of Red Chief.”
@Tonio: @Ukulele Ike:
…Yeah, I guess my theory doesn’t hold all that up well to scrutiny… I guess have to retract it.
But speaking of Edda drooling over Seth constantly, remember how Edda fantasized about cheating on Amos with Seth THE DAY SHE HAD GIVEN BIRTH TO THE TWINS? (not the day of their conception, I mean, when Seth visited her in the maternity ward Edda fantasized about kissing him the way you kiss a lover)
@Dmsilev: You forget that, for all that 9 Chickweed Lane is aggressively, unsettlingly horny, it’s also heavily colored by the author’s unresolved Catholic guilt. Sex must ideally take place within the bonds of holy matrimony, and if it doesn’t the participants must marry as soon as possible. The most blatant case was when Big Gay Seth had a fling with a woman, knocked her up, and then immediately gave up being gay so he could make an honest woman of her.
@Ukulele Ike:
Seth gets a pass; he was gay then.
@TheDiva:
Waitaminute, Seth and Fernanda have a kid? Why was I not informed?
@TheDiva:
“Sex is evil and I am horny”
~Brooke Eldowney (probably)
RMMD- ” The boys are young and have no sense. They took a piss on an electric fence. It burned so bad when it shocked their balls …that it made them shit in their overalls. They should have a bright future in Retail Management. “
Today’s history trivia nugget: Uranus came perilously close to being named “George”.
RMMD2. “We could always tell them that we’re surgeons from corporate, and that the blonde one…Johnny, right?…Has a defective spleen, and we need to remove it immediately. Since the kid has no sense, he’ll think it’s his lucky day!”
@Anonymous: Now I’m filled with a sense of nostalgia for my dog-eared copy of A Rocket in my Pocket. “How dear to my heart are the scenes of my childhood,/When fond recollection presents them to view!”
@Baja Gaijin:
#26. MW: an appearance by Rex saves any script
@ectojazzmage: Before the panel they consult on what schtick they should deliver to their Lockhorns audience. After the panel, they consult on what schtick they should deliver to their OnlyFans audience.
@The Rambling Otter: Just queue up Hosier’s “Take me to Church,” and you have Brooke in a nutshell.
LUANN: Ugh! God, it’s going to be a long nine months.
@2+2=7: They’ll probably name the baby something incredibly stupid.
Seeing how Brad was so inspired to become a fireman due to 9/11 and even tried to get married on 9/11, they’ll probably name the baby “Nina Levin”
Oh my god… that actually does seem plausible.
@53 Activist: It’s been a while since he’s been on panel, especially all the way over in California. Sid let me have Rex for free to get him some “exposure.”
@TheDiva: Yeah, that’s what I was getting at in my observation of how Chickweed tries and fails to be sex positive (that and the hideous art and generally poor attempts at writing sexual talk, with a total lack of heat, chemistry, or fun). It’s like the comic went partway to growing out of a harmful, repressive mindset, than chickened out at the thought of introspection and stopped progressing in favor of doubling down on the repression while also acquiring or worsening extremely unhealthy attitudes towards sex.
@The Rambling Otter: Wait, holy shit, are you for real that Bwad wanted to get married on the fucking anniversary of 9/11? Because if that’s not a joke than oh my god, it’s got be the crowner for the most insane thing in Luann’s history ever. I genuinely couldn’t fathom even the Evans’ being so clueless as to try something like that, but if they did, it’s like, all bets are off, the comic is and has been in the Tyson Zone.
Don Abundio, translated:
“Those are some nice family photos”
“You guys want to see the story of my life in pictures?”
“Okay”
“Good! It’s in real time”
As of today, July 25, Seattle Times appears to be carrying Chickweed and Argyle. Either they’re great strips that gradually become a sophisticated taste, or else they’re dumb. As of today, I don’t know if it’s worth the effort to get to know them.
Dickweed: Don’t forget all the harrowing tales of gay men being “flipped” by a magical vagina! Brooke is such a class act!
@ectojazzmage: I didn’t read the comic when that arc happened (just reading up on it after the fact)
But seeing as he tried to, suggests that Toni (and probably everyone else) talked him out of it, knowing how controversial that would be.
@Activist: To gauge Curmudgeon popular opinion re: 9CL, see pretty much every day’s posts.
The nice thing about the Seattle Time’s addition is that it pops Flash Gordon back up to the top of column two. I felt bad about it wallowing down there in the depths of column one.
9CL: “How can you be sure I’m a boy?” he asked with his pet inchworm standing at attention.
Lockhorns: Leroy is more up on international affairs than I would have given him credit for, perhaps because he’s never quite managed to have any other kind of affair.
C-Shaft: Batiuk bails on the self-insert comic shop follies one day early so as to focus on a slightly different flavor of stupid. Hey Dinkle, if you hadn’t signed your rinky-dink choir up for the concert in the first place, there’d have been no occasion to pull out.
GT: So do they always hand the Coach of the Year a freshly polished traffic cone or..?
H&L: While Thirsty’s beer cans have always looked like PBR, this might be the first explicit depiction of them as such. Also, further evidence that he’s another universe’s quasi-domesticated Frank Booth.
JP: Charlotte, it should be adults who say, “I don’t know what to say to that.” You’re a kid. You can just see a bunny and go chasing after it.
MW: Whoa, there. If Wilbur Weston is having an actual heel realization, are we sure the sky isn’t about to crack?
Phantom: Ian Mollusk needs to run an algorithm to lose patience with his flunkies (somehow) because he doesn’t have the energy to do it himself. Are things okay with him? Guess not.
RMMD: You can’t just walk up to Rex, hand him a five, and ask for two tens as change. He’s got a note written on his right shirt cuff not to fall for that one again.
JP: Don’t worry, Soph, in three to six months you’ll be the one with an unfeasible new direction in your life and it’ll be Neddy’s turn to mope around Spencer Farms whining that her plans never work out again. On the other hand, in nine to twelve months…
OTF: Even when Holbrook’s forced visual metaphors actually work, the problem is he thinks they are, in and of themselves, jokes.
Hi and Lois – At work, Hi needs two minutes with a calculator to add up a couple of figures. But give him a chance to throw cold water all over one of Thirsty’s simple joys, and Hi is instantly there with 24 * 12 = 288!
@Activist: #33: I think what Ike was referring to is that packets of ramen noodles have replaced cigarettes as universal prison currency, since most jails and prisons now ban smoking. Rene/Jimmy needs them as protection money to avoid the butt rapes. My sister-in-law’s ex husband was proud of his stockpile, being the ramen tycoon of the Harris County Jail.
@Artist formerly known as Ben: ….Also, further evidence that he’s another universe’s quasi-domesticated Frank Booth.
Omigod, does that make Lois Dorothy Vallens?
I’m absolutely positive this wasn’t the intended reading, but congratulations to Amos for coming out as non-binary, I guess!
GA – “But not this one! We can’t afford anybody that good.”
*9CL*: It’s really a pity Brooke decided to limit himself to heterosexual couples. Obviously moving on to lesbianism would provide all these women with partners they can actually respect, since all men are mere chewing gum on the bottom of their fashionable shoes. Then again, knowing Brooke it’s likely that being sneered at by women is his basic kink.
@Buck Ripsnort: Big Gay Seth and his boyfriend Mark seemed perfectly happy together before Fernanda’s magical dance moves and miraculous vagina cured Seth of his homosexuality, true, yet Brooke never has featured a lesbian couple. It’s possible that the image of FOUR carefully drawn and meticulously shaded female legs writhing and entwining from under the duvet would make his brain explode.
OBH — Earth *is* named after a deity, just not a Greek or Roman one. Way to be Mediterrrio-centric, strip I’ll never see again!
@Ukulele Ike:
Mark and Janice were by far the most interesting characters in the strip, back in 2008. I think the last we saw of Mark was around the time of Seth’s wedding.
@66 Artist formerly known as Ben: on Mary Worth: Did you see the mashups at #26?
@But What Do I Know?:
What do you mean, named after a deity? Terra isn’t a goddess, she’s Beast Boy’s girlfriend from Teen Titans! /s
@Uncle Lumpy: Yes, Mark and Janice simultaneously saying “Hey! I LOVE your hair!” was the final funny punchline featured in 9CL.
If I’d been Mark I would have declined the wedding invitation, but sent a huge bouquet of dead flowers.
H&L – There really was much more of a story behind it than simple drunkardry, but I once basically pulled Thirsty’s move here, and am loving seeing it in popular fiction. Also, Hi’s impotent fury. You really suck, Hi!
@Ukulele Ike: “And I won’t forget to put roses on your grr-AVE”
9CL: I have to say I have come to a new relationship with 9CL. I used to think it was gross as it explored its topic all over the place. Then I was conflicted as I usually don’t like train wrecks, but 9CL became the first read in my list. But I now realize that the cartoonist is just short of 74 years old and he is burning down the edifice as he sees what prurient content he can get away with until he dies. And, Brooke, if you’re reading, I’m here for it. I remember grad school humor. You do it well, and someday I will be 74.
Compare that with Luann. I can’t imagine waking up every day realizing that, every day, you have to work with those characters and those themes you have dug yourself into. I read Luann second, full of pity.
@Guillermo el chiclero:
#69. News to me! Thanks for the context.
@Ukulele Ike: Oh dear, you may be right. In which case Hi’s ear might end up an item in a scavenger hunt.
@Baja Gaijin: I hadn’t when I made my original comment but I have now. One’s a nice nod to the Bard’s The Winter’s Tale, although Wilbur is no Antigonus.
@MikeP:
I see Luann and 9 Chickweed Lane as almost identical in their approach to sex: “Tee-hee, aren’t we naughty!”, but only, or at least eventually, within the confines of monogamous church-sanctioned heterosexual marriage. Pre-unicorn Chickweed was interesting once you got past the insufferably pretentious dialogue. Now the characters are interchangeable and monomaniacal, and still with the pretentious dialogue. You’d think with all the sex they’d grunt once in a while.
@Peanut Gallery: What he can’t do is tell when Thirsty is drunk, probably because he has nothing to compare it to.
Late Thread Cuisine: Ooooh, those are some great looking buns!
MW: Wilbur, Wilbur, Wilbur. You’ve got this all backward. Refusing to forgive Tommy won’t make you a drunken, slovenly, self-obsessed hypocrite. You already are a drunken, slovenly, self-obsessed hypocrite, and that’s why you refuse to forgive him.
@Anonymous: The Terra I know first and foremost was the half-Esper who helped saved the world from a maniacal clown-god of destruction.
The “Earth isn’t named after a deity” thing is IMO kind of interesting because by the time we figured out what those wandering (as opposed to fixed) stars were and that Earth was one of them, it was too late.
Normally, the first of something doesn’t get a real name at first (the Moon, the Sun, etc.) but (the) Earth bucks that trend.
@Baja Gaijin: Fish, shaped like a fish. That’s either horrifying, or what passed for humor in 1973.
@The Rambling Otter: (Sorry Baja!)
@90 The Rambling Otter: “…a maniacal clown-god of destruction.” WHAT???? I do not want to live in a universe with an EVILSCARYMANIACALCLOWNGODOFDESTRUCTION.
@Baja Gaijin: Don’t worry :3
He’s dead. The heroes killed him.
-pats-
@Baja Gaijin: Although The Joker once gained Godlike powers, before Superman convinced him to get rid of them before reality collapses.
In fact the previous villain I mentioned “Kefka” has always been compared to the Joker to due being a clown and having similar levels of sadism.
Heck, Dave Wittenburg who voiced Kefka in one of the crossovers, does a rather good impression of Mark Hamill, who voiced Joker in the DCAU (not certain if that’s intended though)
Edit: Notably as both usually sound upbeat and happy, but when they get really pissed off they speak in a low guttural voice.
(Can’t be a coincidence)
@95 The Rambling Otter: Whew! I can sleep tonight.
@96 The Rambling Otter: Wait, what? The Joker was an EVILSCARCLOWN? I didn’t know that. He doesn’t have the antigravity fringe of red hair or the big floppy shoes.
@Baja Gaijin: The Joker, is one of the most infamous clown villains in fiction.
But yeah, thinking about it, Sideshow Bob from the Simpsons is more naturally clown-like.
@Baja Gaijin: Sorry, I really should just stop saying the C-Word
For your benefit ^^
@Baja Gaijin: I’ve never been crazy about salmon, but we once visited one of our British authors up in the Lake District who provided as lunch an enormous poached cold salmon along with a bowl of homemade dill mayonnaise. It was….fantastic. One of those times when Brit food turns out SO MUCH better than it sounds.
Afterwards we all went to the local for large gins.
@Baja Gaijin:
#88. Roast pigs have red apples in their mouths, steamed salmon appear to be chomping on green cilantro.
@Ukulele Ike:
we once visited one of our British authors up in the Lake District who provided as lunch an enormous poached cold salmon
And here I’m trying to picture a British author who fishes illegally.
@99 The Rambling Otter: Thanks.
@100 Ukulele Ike: The Lake District is beautiful. Just chocked full o’quaintness.
@101 Activist: Are you sure it’s not barfing up parsley? I’d probably put the hollandaise sauce on the side, not slathering all over the fish.
@Baja Gaijin: I prefer broiled salmon (on the BBQ) with lemon and dill. Then smoked with alder for a few minutes for additional flavor.
Gravlax for me!
Will Batiuk try to make Harry Fucking Dinkle a political martyr? God I hope so.
@104 Al of the Christian Singles Jungle Patrol: When do you add the grody-looking sauce to anti-lookmaxx it? What kind of odd garnishes do you use? Man, I’ve been looking at these retro-recipes far too long.
@105 Uncle Lumpy: Gravlax? Sounds like a competitor to Ex-Lax. [searches internet] Hm. It might be.
@Baja Gaijin: Those sure are some ingredients often used in the making of food.
Ned Flanders: Who wants low-fat ice-milk?
Todd: Yeah!
Rod: I want wintergreen flavored!
Maude: Unflavored for me.
@Baja Gaijin: Never venture into Warhammer 40K then, and if you do don’t go anywhere near Cegorach…
@110 Tom: Never venture into What? and don’t go anywhere near Huh? Is that Star Trek?
@CanuckDownSouth: Re MT, what you said.
MW: Once again I marvel at the huge amount of serene green space enjoyed by Charterstoners. Are we entirely sure this isn’t some kind of ultra-high-end holodeck?
@Baja Gaijin: I only know of Warhammer 4k
Because of a Family Circus comic where Billy says that for Halloween he’s decided that he doesn’t want to go as a ghost.
He wants to dress up as “Tactical Sergeant Tarkus from the Blood Raven’s 4th company in Warhammer 40,000”
That’s one of the unironically funnier Family Circus’s I’ve read.
Also it was kind of a meme for a while due to how completely out of left field the reference was.
@Baja Gaijin: Oooh, we’re back in 1973, and this time I have a better notion of which stocks to buy!
JP: No worries, Sophie, Bogdan could show up at any moment and decide how your life will go FOR you.
@Poteet: In ’73, you couldn’t go wrong investing in “Americans” and “Generals”.
@Baja Gaijin:
Oh, in Warhammer 40k the Aeldar (Space Elves, or Evil-Grimdark-Vulcans) have a secret splinter faction; you see, most of the Aeldar were sent into a diaspora when they created a space-devil of Excess, Lust and Wanton Slaughter through their debauchery (the Chaos Demon Slaneesh), and have suppressed all emotions to forget it (and also hide themselves from its demonic influence)… except for the keepers of their secret archive of ALL THINGS THAT EVER EXISTED (the Black Library), who travel the galaxy re-enacting this dark event.
They’re called the Harlequins. Because they dress as EVILSCARYCLOWNS. On purpose. They WANT to evoke the clowns you see in your nightmares, even BEFORE they shoot you with their guns that melt you from the inside-out…
1. I’m a neophyte in WH40K lore, so this is probably all wrong.2. Sorry not sorry for unleashing 40k lore on you
@Hibbleton: It was Marion Chesney, aka M.C. Beaton. She was a gracious hostess. Unfortunately I had been in the area mainly to hang out with James McClure, by whom I had been so awed I completely forgot her name when I introduced them. (I had edited and recently published his final novel, The Song Dog.)
You can look em up.
Family Circus:
I sing of Lumpy and the Mashed Potatoes.
Oopsy. I always confuse my Aeneid and my Iliad.
9 Chickweed and that giblorn comic are clearly written by someone who actually believes those who say they watch porn for the plot.
