Comment of the Week

Pinocchio holds his own control bars aloft and finally earns his therapist's approval despite the obvious fact that the physics of the whole situation -- just like the original 'lifting oneself by one's bootstraps' -- are quite impossible. He is no Aristotelian unmoved mover. Pinocchio knows this; he has grimly resigned himself to a performative dance of supposed self-determination to avoid the smug nagging of those around him.

I’m almost certainly not the person to turn to for cultural authenticity, but do you ever get the feeling that some African-American-themed comic strips are actually written by 75-year-old white guys?

This strip really caught my eye in this regard. There’s really no better way to casually deploy a hip slang word that all the kids are using than by putting quote marks around it.

Herb & Jamaal certainly isn’t the worst offender in this category, though. I think every instance of the word rap in Curtis is surrounded by quote marks and followed by the word junk.

There are many reasons why black-and-white daily strips should not be colored in by people who aren’t the actual strip creators. This is one of them. The only way that I can figure out that this happened is that the person who colored this is in a comics-coloring sweatshop in Burma somewhere and speaks no English. Or maybe they’re color blind, and their employer is worried about the inevitable ADA lawsuit that would result from their dismissal.
