Metapost: “No comment” of the week!
Q: “Uncle Lumpy, you say you don’t pick the “Comment of the week” because it’s Josh’s prerogative, but isn’t the real reason that you’re just too damn lazy?”
A: “No comment.”
I have sweet metaposty goodness for you nonetheless! Faithful readers who remember last year’s Gail Martin lunacy cascade (with concert t-shirt and fan wiki) will be pleased to hear that faithful reader Scott’s Kalamazoo, MI-based band, New Real People, has recorded the definitive version of Tarzana Nights for the twenty-first century. While my own musical tastes run toward Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians, the cover art alone is nine kinds of awesome:
Y’all can sample and download the song here.
And in other news: I run fundraisers for The Comics Curmudgeon twice a year when I sub for Josh — not this time, though. But if you feel moved to buy Josh and Amber a round of Nardini Grappa Riserva to share at the terrace bar of the Hotel Baia Dei Mulini in Trapani as the last warm rays of the Mediterranean sunset catch the highlights in Amber’s hair and the music of the surf mingles with the soft laughter of young love — well, I can’t see anybody objecting, y’know? It’s that “Donate” button over at the left there. Just sayin’.

It’s appropriate that a Kalamazoo-based band would record the definitive modern Gail Martin song, because some years ago, Gil Thorpe got a coaching offer from Kalamazoo College. As a former student at that institution, I was really hoping Gil would decline, and he did. That was the only time I actually cared about what happened in GT — a weird feeling.

Hi Lump, you’re doing a heckuva splendid job filling in for the Big Guy. One thing: “You’re can sample and download the song”? No big deal, but I think you may have meant “Y’all can sample and download the song”

#109 bats :[ (previous thread) Re: FOOB— Sunday’s FOOB was an all-time low for Lynn Johnston. That’s quite an accomplishment given all of the many previous examples of wretchedness that have emanated from her pen. It’s hard to out-gross LJ at her worst, but bats :[, you have succeeded hilariously!
Congratulations!

I cannot describe how cool it is to live in an era where someone can write REAL songs about a fake singer in a bizarre comic – this totally made my day.

I was going to complain that Tarzania Nights is obviously a cover since it’s sung by a male… but then I decided that it’s actually better to imagine that the singer *is* Gail Martin.

Fred Waring? I remember those choral specials on WPSU they had in his memory. Dang, that certainly wasn’t a reference I was expecting to see.

# 8 Otro Dave — I hadn’t seen it before, so thanks. I especially like the way Kate Beaton has combined the hideous old Anthony with the hideous new Anthony. And Kate has got the essentials of Elly’s face DOWN.

Monday’s Foob seems to hint at a week of flashbacks since next Saturday’s strip will also be a re-run.
So if Lynn is in such a hurry to get the wedding done by August when the strip goes into whatever mode its going into that she can’t have Liz go see her grandfather, why is she wasting time with this crap?

26. LTBF: yep, more flashbacks instead of advancing the current storyline, such as it is. I, for one, don’t need to waste LJ’s “30-second insights” on repeated shenanigans — I know in a nanosecond that Michael’s an asshole. Always has been, always will be.

I’m another long-time lurker, pulled in by the Gail Martin revival.
The song really sounds freakishly Carol King-y, and the lyrics are a perfect reflection of the 70’s soft rock tendencies toward flashing one’s overly-earnest sensitivity while tossing in some squeam-inducing canoodling references for good measure. I can totally believe that this was Gail’s big hit back in the day.
It’s pretty hard to pull off straight-faced full-throttle musical satire of this caliber. Impressive!
