Truly, who amongst us is not going through it

Hi and Lois, 10/17/26

A “flash mob” used to be what you’d call it when a bunch of people agreed on the internet to show up in a public place and do some kind of silly dance or something, but now it’s what the local news calls smash-and-grab crime sprees while narrating the grainy smash-and-grab crime spree footage they love to put into heavy rotation. Which version is going to show up in the Flagston driveway? Based on the very different expressions on Hi and the teens’ faces, opinions differ!
Dennis the Menace, 10/17/26

“That’s right, Dennis. It’s feet-loaf! It’s ground up feet, and we’re making you eat it! What’re you gonna do, cook for yourself?”
Wizard of Id, 10/17/26

Do you guys remember Wizard of Id, the goofy, whimsical comic in a pseudomedieval setting? Well, uh. They’re, uh, “going through it,” over there, as the kids might say. They’re going through it pretty bad!

Garfield without Garfield
The Lockhorns Mashup: With added truth!
DtM: They’re called hooves, Dingus. Now shut up and eat your food.
Dennis, Dennis, Dennis. A true menace would deliver his insult without asking for permission. Nice start but you failed to stick the landing!
The keyboardist in Chip’s band (whose name is Sid) is black on Sundays and also has a slightly different afro. Or is it just a different guy?
H&L: So what, a flash mob is going to show up to do a little dance routine or something and you’re going to drown it out with your terrible music? Actually, that’s pretty funny. Proceed!
DtM: Dennis, your parents have to feed you ‘Feet Loaf’ to help your lower appendages catch up with your upper ones. I mean, look at those forearms: you look like a chimp on creatine powder.
H&L: The new ‘flash mobs’ by me is groups of teens running around the subs at three in the morning breaking into cars and stealing what’s left in ’em. Hi is thinking “Oh, great. Now I have to clean out the Suburban.”
H&L: I have so many questions about the guy in the center wearing the sailor hat. Is he an inadvertent time traveler who has come to terms with being dropped into the mid-2020s but hasn’t quite adjusted yet? Alternatively, is he dressing in such a way because he wants to actually be noncomformist rather than just joining a subculture?
And why is he holding a tambourine, which is not an instrument associated with teenage garage bands? Does he have no real musical ability but the other guys wanted him in the band ’cause they’re bros? Or is his choice of instruments a decision on the part of Chip Flagston, who under the slacker exterior is an avant-garde artiste who wants to do something different than the usual rock?
Unfortunately, exploring this would require the strip to break its gag-a-day format and focus on the title characters, but it would at least be interesting.
@Tom: I’m reminded of Bez, the tambourine and maracas player from Happy Mondays. His real job in the band was of course just to take a superhuman quantity of drugs, which would also explain one or two other things about this character.

Toby: I know! I’ll go to the little girls’ room and write an email to that advice column, Ask Wendy!
“Dear Wendy, I’ve been hearing rumours that my husband, who’s both pompous and an axx, is cheating on me with the local pathological meddler who’s at least 150 years old. What should I do?”
@Baja Gaijin:
Should be Apple Mary since it’s vintage.
Stone Soup – For a minute there, Phil thought he and Wally were Eskimo bros.
WoI: I honestly can’t tell if that’s supposed to be the Wizard or some sort of mutant cat-person.
@Tom:
Their idea of a teen rock band primarily comes from old Hanna Barbera cartoons. Cartoons such as Jabber Jaw, Josie and the Pussycats, and The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show which had The Bedrock Rockers and they try to emulate them.
DtM: “Of course it does, Dennis! I made it with toe-fu.”
Hi & Lois : nah, Chip meant a third thing, a criminal organisation based around a now-defunct piece of software that enabled people to program (and play) simple games online.

Luann : the “luxury condo” was a broom closet where Phil was expected to sleep standing up. The “cheap alternative Phil had to settle for due to a limited budget” is a 3 (maybe even 3+!) room appartement with TWO separate toilets.
…Is this intentional, or…?

Wizard of Id : I thought it was about a land ruled by a petty tyrant who is so unpopular he is constantly mocked by his populace, and so in retaliation the tyrant doubles down on the cruelty, meanwhile the title character is just happy that this anarchy means he can pursue his evil, dark experiments unperturbed (wreaking even more havoc in the process?)
…Like, the failed TV pilot made it clear this strip isn’t the “squeaky-clean, cutesy” Muppets, it’s the “random monsters eating people, followed by explosions” Muppets.
@matt w:
Well if Velma Dinkley can suddenly change from being a nerdy white American girl to suddenly being a South Asian American teenager with brown skin.
Imagine the reaction if this is the final Wizard of Id strip. Just ending with the destruction of the kingdom and the death of all the major characters except the title character, who wanders off into the sunset as it all burns down. It’d be like Cormac McCarthy took over the writing suddenly.
Wizard of Id-I thinl a welfare check needs to be done on whoever writes this.
Blondie-“You wouldn’t want any accidents to happen.”
FC-“No. I just sit and sadly stare out the window.”
MW-Confront Ian the same way you told him when you took in a parrot.
WofI-The time had finally come to rise up and overthrow the King.
Pluggers are literally going to starve to death in their homes because they don’t know how to use a phone.
