Really thought his name was “Carson Hovercar” for a minute

I’m sorry, the inhabitants of Hootin’ Holler speak in an exaggerated rustic faux-hillbilly dialect, so I simply do not accept that Loweezy would utter the sentence “Recent events have raised Jughaid’s already unrealistic expectations.” I do, however, accept that the inhabitants of Hootin’ Holler, connected to the outside world only via feeble radio signals and whatever news they get by word of mouth from flatlander visitors, would consider April’s Artemis II lunar flyby to be “recent events.”
Gearhead Gertie, 10/15/26

I love how Gertie has basically the same vacant, cheerful expression in both panels here. She loves Dale Earnhardt! And imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so she loves Carson Hocevar, for sincerely flattering Dale Earnhardt!

“Plus, I’m a coach, not a player, so I’ll be on the sidelines and won’t have any physical contact with him. Have fun getting concussed or maimed or whatever!”

GT:
“Can I ask you something?”
“Shoot.”
“Why are we all drawn here as if we’re crazed marionettes?”
Gertie’s new hoverchair means that she’ll ride in style to every part of her living room.
GT:
“Hey, Coach! — check out how I made our school name and my uniform number disappear from today’s last panel!”
“…April’s Artemis II lunar flyby…”
Spoiler alert: Loweezy is talking about Neil Armstrong’s July 1969 landing on the Moon.
GG:
“And here comes ZZ Top in their Tour Car. The Eliminator!”
JP: Yes, threaten to withhold the psycho assassin’s child from her while you are completely unarmed. I’m sure that will be *real* effective…
RMMD: Love that squint in Whatserface’s right eye. ‘Gotta put in a *pitch* for the family business… now don’t you want to *reconsider* your choice…?”
MW No, no, no – Toby! The question isn’t appetizers vs dessert, a confrontation is paired with either cocktails or dinner wine!
JP I literally _can’t_ because I don’t _know_ why I did this – the writer has no idea how to maintain dramatic tension except by having people not talk about the plot points!
GT. A sixteen year old with a receding hairline like that really ought to lay off the steroids.
GT I’m also afraid of the other teams catching on that you’re an adult ringer – please readjust that toupee, your male pattern baldness is showing.
BG & SS:
“That there’s incredibly precise ellycution, Loweezy. What else do ya have to say for yourself?”
“The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain.”
“You been hangin’ around with that Perfessor Henry Higgins feller again?”
GT: “Not the whole scorpion. Just the tail. Oh, wait. I forgot about the pincers. Them too. Might as well throw in the rest.” [Gets up and walks off mumbling to himself] “Borys is nothing special but don’t get me started about centipedes…”
Gil Thorp:
Look, I’m not going to begrudge a man for having a phobia, but why small scorpions? Is he specifically afraid of them hiding in his shoes? Did he have a traumatic experience as a child where a small scorpion was about to attack him, but a big one came charging to his rescue?
GT “Its just high school sports, why would I get emotionally invested in that?”. Good question Gil Thorp, very good question.
BGSS Hillbillies speaking in convoluted sentences and sudden new obsessions with going to the moon? Looks like Neuralink finally found a population for beta testing.
Gil Thorp again:
“Specifically my current wife. My ex-wife? Fuck her. I hope her shoes are filled with tiny scorpions.”
Gil Thorp yet again:
“Why aren’t I afraid of Borys? Well, you see, I’m not out there on the field. He’s not going to give me a concussion!”
Jughaid is getting too big for his britches, and Loweezy has two options to rein him back into reality; deliver a lecture on the environmental impact of the many rockets now used for smaller, routine missions to guilt him out of his dream, or try to build a soundstage of the moon in an old barn. Some nonzero percentage of Hootin’ Holler probably see the moon landing as being staged, so she could get some help setting it up, as long as it’s for a practical joke on Jughaid
Barney Google and Snuffy Smith:
Weezy’s right, those are pretty unrealistic expectations. Hootin’ Holler doesn’t have any technology advanced enough to play Geoge Méliès’s seminal 1902 silent film A Trip to the Moon!
BG&SS: So, even when Loweezy briefly morphs into a Harvard graduate, it’s still “JugHAID?”
GT: Why don’t big scorpions scare him? And how often does he encounter them? I thought they lived in Somewhere, Middle America.
MW: Mary’s cooking for your Date Night, Tobes. So you can make your scene during either the orange blobs course or the muffins.
DT: Pretty unnerving that the Wendell Wodehouse VI’s hands are the same size as Dick’s when the rest of his body is a desiccated, shriveled husk. Makes you wonder what unholy cocktail of chemicals he was exposed to during his years in the Marine Corps. Anyway, he’s not at all sinister and I’m sure he and Dick will hit it off famously, just two authoritarian, sorry, “precision” peas in a dystopian Neo-Chicago pod.
JP: Before anyone says, “April’s could just murderize Neddy,” remember that Neddy is really good at punching people in the neck.
Gearhead Gertie:
I looked up this Kyle Hocevar fellow, and it seems that he does indeed have a reputation for dirty driving that has drawn the ire of his fellow racers. So this comic makes sense if you’re a NASCAR fan, although I’d argue it still isn’t funny. So, just like every other Gearhead Gertie.
@Vulpes: #18: They could maybe handle Ed Wood’s Plan 9 from Outer Space.
Baldo – The pricing on those sledgehammers is . . . noteworthy.
