Theological, interplanetary, and medical problems

Shoe, 10/29/26

I don’t think you should bring your own botox to a party. I think botox should be supplied and injected by trained and licensed medical professionals! Call me a stick in the mud who doesn’t align with current government policy on this topic, but I feel strongly about it.
Flash Gordon, 10/29/26

As you know, I mostly don’t comment on new-look Flash Gordon here except to note how cool it is and that you should definitely be reading it. It dips deep into the strip’s lore for a lot of stuff but also isn’t afraid to stake out new narrative territory, including, apparently, “Dr. Zarkov has been low-key fucking his way through the Mongolithic lady scientist community ever since he arrived on this planet.”
Herb and Jamaal, 10/29/26

“God would never tell anyone to eat at this place,” thinks Rev. Croom. “I would know: I eat here every day, having been tempted to do so by Satan. I only do it to better know the Enemy, so I can defeat him!”
Mary Worth, 10/29/26

“He’s not the sharpest tool in the shed! Doesn’t always understand what’s going on! Truly unequipped for even the basics of navigating daily life! Dumber than a pillowcase full of doorknobs!” [suddenly starts sobbing] “Mary, I love him SO MUCH”

Mary Worth Mashups: Which of the three takes on today’s strip do you like best?
Mary will stop at nothing in her quest to find the rumor-spreader at Charterstone – including walking into Dawn’s bedroom unannounced. Hey Lady, get a warrant.
MW: Glad to see the return of homely Dawn from the nineties. I guess she escaped from wherever she’s been held all these years and killed her changeling. Tommy will be too dumb to notice.
To I Speak Jive (or anyone else who knows) regarding yesterday’s conversation about Philadelphia fans: Does anyone know if Karen Ballsnatcher was ever identified for sure? I know a few names emerged, but they may have been misidentifications. I hope no one got unfairly shamed.
Um, Dawn…. He only passed along the rumor he heard. And you did likewise. So you also didn’t “get things right.” Poor girl.
MW:
“I don’t want to say that Tommy often doesn’t get things right with regard to things Scottish, but he thinks that ‘Loch Ness’ refers to a tuft of American Prohibition ‘Untouchables’ Agent Eliot’s hair!”
Shoe: Not sure what it was about the punchline that required her to get off her stool. (“Now this is just between us ladybirds.”)
MW: Tomorrow it will be Tommy staked out naked over an anthill with Mary pouring honey on his genitals.
MW: Nice to see Lampy is still getting steady work.
MW:
“Hold that question for a second, Mary! — I’m initiating a wire transfer to an overseas prince to help him unlock his $50,000,000 bank account, after which he’ll give me $10,000,000 of it!”
MW: Dawn knows that Mary’s wrath will be swift and brutal. In a final, desperate act of love, she tries to spare Tommy by implying that he’s too stupid to realize what he’s done. Unfortunately, her efforts will be for naught, because Mary has no mercy and has also held a grudge against Tommy ever since the day she smelled cannabis through the air vents.
DT: I’m confused. Wouldn’t a state’s attorney named Vyshinsky be champing at the bit to prosecute someone without evidence that a crime even occurred?
DT2: Ah, I get it now. “Vyshinsky” must be her married name because she’s clearly supposed to be from Wodehouse clan of Lovecraftian inbreds, and I welcome it. With its penchant for disfigured body horror villains and gruesome, hideous deaths, I’m surprised that this strip hasn’t visited that well before.
Phantom: Very much enjoying this plot twist of Vindicta’s henchmen being like, “But, wait, are you— are you a dumbass?”
MW: That’s not Mary, that’s the Other Mary with buttons sewed over her eye sockets! Dawn conjures her up when she seeks absolution for her thought crimes against the real Mary.
Flash Gordon:
“Hold on a second. You’re not ‘Hanak’ — you’re Paul Shaffer from David Letterman!”
@TK: well, she _did_ start by barging in to see Wilbur, I’d blame both of them for not locking their front door, but they long ago gave up on that as it made no difference – Mary seems to have either a master key or eldritch powers
@Baja Gaijin: Dusk’s eyes in the last one are terrifying :-0
@Baja Gaijin:
IMHO, One of those edits should have retained Mary, but “lifted” her arm “back into frame” so that we could more clearly see that Dawn is volunteering this information because Mary is holding her at gunpoint.

Snuffy Smith : “B-b-but Jughaid, I wunted us to haff matchin’ costumes, so I dressed as my favorite superhero,
ZatannaMANDRAKE!”***************
Flash Gordon : Zarkov treating Mongo as his weird Isekai MonsterGirl Harem adventure is an… interesting new take on the character, I’ll admit.
***************
Herb & Jamaal : this is the least vague the strip has been about what it’s trying to say, and it STILL isn’t clear if it means that Herb & Jamaal’s diner is tempting junk food (which God would disapprove of), or horrifically shitty food.
**************
Hi & Lois ; Medusa doesn’t fit the (incredibly forced) naming scheme, Vampirella is actually a hero. You suck, Ditto.
**************
Shoe : …homemade Botox sounds like a great recipe to poison yourself with botulism.
Shoe:
” ‘Bring Your Own Booze’ ?”
“No. ‘Birds You Ogle Briefly.’ “
Murky Tail:
“I’m Ray Gunn, my colleague is Gatling Gunn, my assistant is Dart Gunn, my boss is Mashin’ Gunn, and you could say we’re all gunning for blue shrimp criminals.”
AI Wannabee:
– FRAZZ: but Caulfield, I don’t remember the computer having ng an image in 2001.
– PHANTOM: If AI doesn’t like being in your phone, it can hope over to your coffee Brewer, eh ? Now, things really get tough.
GA: appears to have been discontinued by Seattle Times.
JP: Ned, a conversation hint– if you don’t like being pried, turn the question around. “So what are you doing with your degree, Sis? Helping with traffic tickets?
Shoe: I can’t stop looking between the two panels and trying to figure out that woman and the stools manage to switch places like that. My best theory is that Roz’s is actually a revolving restaurant, which is a bit weird for a shitty diner, but would explain the generally nauseous expressions of the patrons.
HJ: Ironically, Reverend Croom’s desire is to feel superior than those around him, which is why he doesn’t actually share his little pearls of wisdom with anyone.
MW: “Still, didn’t stop me from repeating it to others. I’m pretty dumb too!”
Flash Gordon: It strikes me that a member of the Frigian Society might well be frigid.
Wary Morth:
Mary: “Oh, Tommy must have dreamt it up when he was high as a kite again. Never mind, then.”
@Baja Gaijin:
#1. MW: the “eyes” have it.
MW:
“Tommy is dumber than a box of rocks. That puts him in good company here at Charterstone!”
Mary Worth is taking weeks to play out a plot REO Speedwagon summarized in about four minutes.
A lesser strip would have the people who spread the rumour be very apologetic to Mary and bemoan their foolishness. Not “Mary Worth”! Everyone is a weasel, not even saying a little “sorry” and unloading the blame on someone else. I love it!
@Guillermo el chiclero: @Guillermo el chiclero: No, Tuesday is Mary and Tommy’s “honey day,” we’ll be exploring that more once Mary finishes following this trail.
This is very realistic. If someone entered in a public business, announcing that God told him to come here, I would also sit very still, judgemental, but uncomfortable
FG: Frankly I’m disappointed it’s only the ladies. Rowa’s clearly thirsting for Zarkov’s world-weary daddy energy, and if Hanak’s comment doesn’t scream “bitter ex-boyfriend” I’m not sure what does.
MW: I almost admire the furious backpeddling everyone’s doing to assure us they didn’t really believe that silly rumor about Mary and Ian. They all love Mary, nobody would ever turn on her like that, we’ve always been at war with Eurasia.
Curtis: I can see this is a scam a mile away, but for some reason, I have to give them props for pulling it off. And if it’s legitimate, then there’s one less bully, so it’s win-win.
“I have seen the Earth revolve around the sun so many times! But this year we stop aging!”
“You inject botox?”
“No, we ingest it! Goodbye cruel world, my body will not get any older!”
MW — Dawn calling someone else stupid–that’s rich. . .
H&J — Obviously Rev. Croon hasn’t been reading his Kierkegaard. If God tells you to do something, you do it! Or is it that the good Reverend wants to be the only one who can receive messages from the Almighy?
MW: “He often doesn’t get things right”
So why on earth did you repeat what he told you?
@TheDiva: Ugh, what did I do now?
@Charterstone: Dune: Ha. I hadn’t been following, but “yeah-it’s-Elon-Musk turns over his evil plot to his custom-made AI, which blows his cover and also says he’s useless” is a great plot. No notes.
@matt w: And then I remembered that they fired the writer and he’s not sure if his successor will complete the story, which is sad.
MW: Okay, I threw up a little in my mouth after we were treated to Ian and Toby “renewing their love” in their bedroom, but today’s interplay between Mary and Dawn in another “bedroom scene” definitely makes me afraid to see what happens in tomorrow’s strip, when the two women patch up the misunderstanding and renew their friendship.
JP: Tune in tomorrow for DRAMA!! as Sophie follows through on that surly expression in panel two, yanks Neddy to her feet and bitchslaps her two dozen times.
RMMD: Note how Beatty is at pains to show Buck’s wedding ring in today’s Awkward Disembodied Hand Gesture. He wants the world to know this future incel was the product of a religiously sanctified union, as it should be! Speaking of which…
Luann: Time is a big mushy ball when it comes to continuity strips (especially *this* one) but should we already be at the ‘feel the baby kick!’ point? Unless Toni was messing with B-wad, I’m expecting to see them on those ‘Life begins at conception!’ billboards I see scattered around this land of ours…
*Anything to take her mind off the fact that she’s carrying his spawn.
I wouldn’t be able to say nothing but good things about “Flash Gordon”, so I never comment it. What I am able to say is that the fact that some newspaper comics (Flash Gordon, Popeye) are still able to produce high-quality art is an indictment of all the other comics
@Anonymous: re: FG I only have superficial knowledge of The Lore so was unaware that this is a new take – it certainly has been a constant for Zarkov with the modern writers. They got separated by transport disks and even in a silent montage of Zarkov’s tale, he boinked his way to getting help sciencing his way back to the people and places he knew
@Activist: Ph -I lost a really long post I made on this. But the short answer is “yes.”
MW: Sensing that she’s in the crosshairs, Nelly packs up and hightails it outta Charterstone.
SHOE: ” And a guest surgeon, who will perform beakoplasties on request!”
GT: A major emotional reaction from Gil; he’s showing some eye-whites.
