Metapost: Found art

During a recent visit to a D.C.-area old folks’ home, I found an abandoned Style section from the Washington Post in the billiards room. In addition to the traditional “What’s In-What’s Out” New Year’s feature (and half of the “in” items I’ve never heard of, including “The Maybach”, “Move that bus!”, and “Annasophia Robb”, thus proving conclusively that I am not “in”), it also included the following cartoon, which sort of does my job for me. I figured I’d reproduce it here to tide you over since I’m being such a slacker about posting stuff this week.

I should have new comics up by this evening, but I make no promises. If you’re getting desperate for comics-derived larfs, I urge you to check out these poorly-drawn cartoons inspired by actual spam subject lines.

Update: Also funny: Subdivided We Stand’s recap of the last few weeks of Mary Worth.

Well, the Maybach is a car, but I don’t blame you for not knowing that. It’s a Mercedes “supercar” that only NBA stars and Saudi princes can afford.

But anyway, I doubt I knew 1/3 of the Post’s “ins” — and an embarrassingly low number of the “outs.” But it was a stupid list, so I don’t blame myself, either.

Apropos of nothing in particular, the close juxtaposition of two of my browser bookmarks just caused me to read the following:
“I Get Your War On So You Don’t Have To”

I offer the concept freely to anybody misguided enough to want it. The possibilities are… well, probably pretty few, but I found the idea amusing.

Keep saving us from the comics, but I like the ‘niceness’ too.

I’ve just read that the LA Times has drop-kicked Garfield. One down. Several hundred to go. Your thoughts on this long-overdue and very welcome development?

I’m dying over here. Where are my new comics? Lazy bastard. I bet you got one of those recliners with the beer cooler built in for Christmas. Now you won’t get off your ass and get this blog going.

My wife has asked that I alert you to the fact that she thought up the Howard Huge joke. Then she bounced a small object off my head.

spam inspired cartoons: a comic event
Spamusement! Poorly-drawn cartoons inspired by actual spam subject lines! For a moment, as I laughed in endless mirth– all the spam was OK. Just a moment, then I caught myself and detested spammers…

What’s happened to Doonesbury this week?
He was cutting close to the bone with the CIA-torture thread, and suddenly we’re seeing old repeat strips.

Vacation? Or did he offend the comic syndicate again?
